Rochester Car Buyer connects people selling cars in the Rochester, NY area with a licensed local dealership that buys them. This policy explains what we collect when you use rochestercarbuyer.com, why, and the choices you have. We don't sell your personal information.
What we collect
- Your car: VIN or license plate, year, make, model, trim, mileage, and your answers about its condition, keys, title, and any loan (including the lender and an approximate payoff range).
- Photos you take: pictures of your car. They can show the plate, VIN sticker, and what's around the car, so take them somewhere you're comfortable showing. Photos are taken in your browser and don't include your phone's location.
- How to reach you: your name, mobile number, ZIP code, and email if you give it.
- Texting consent: if you check the texting box, the wording you agreed to, the time, your IP address, and your browser type, so we can show you agreed.
- Basic technical info: which sign or link brought you here, which steps of the form you reached, your device and browser type, and your IP address. We store a random ID on your device so your answers aren't lost if you leave and come back. We don't use advertising cookies or third-party tracking.
Saved as you go: once you enter your mobile number, we save your answers even if you don't finish, so we can follow up on your offer.
How we use it
- To look up your car and pass it to our dealership partner so they can make you an offer.
- To call, text (only if you agreed), or email you about your offer, an inspection, pickup, and payment.
- To complete and record a purchase, including title and loan payoff paperwork.
- To keep the site safe and stop spam and fraud.
- To see which signs and pages work, so we can improve them.
- To follow the law.
Text messages
You only get texts, from us or our dealership partner, if you check the box agreeing to it. Texts are about your car and your offer. How often depends on your offer; message and data rates may apply. To stop, reply STOP or tell us any other way (call, email, or reply in your own words). Reply HELP for help. Your mobile number and texting consent are never shared with or sold to anyone else for their marketing.
Who we share it with
- Companies that run parts of our service for us: Cloudflare (website hosting, photo storage, and spam protection), Twilio (texts), and Resend (email). They may only use your info to provide those services to us.
- Vehicle lookups: we send your VIN to the U.S. Department of Transportation's free vehicle database (NHTSA) to decode it. If you look up by plate, we send the plate and state to a vehicle data provider.
- Our dealership partner: when you ask for an offer, we send your info and photos to a licensed New York dealership that buys cars. They use it to make your offer, contact you about it, and complete the purchase, and they handle it under their own privacy policy. We don't get paid for your info, and we don't share it with anyone else.
- Your lender: only if you sell us a car with a loan, to get the payoff and the title.
- When the law requires it, or to protect our rights, our customers, or the public.
- If our business is sold or merged, to the new owner, who must follow this policy.
How long we keep it
If your car isn't sold through us, we keep your info for up to 24 months in case you want an updated offer, then delete it. If it is, we keep records of the sale as long as the law requires. You can ask us to delete your info sooner (see below).
How we protect it
The site uses encryption (HTTPS). Only our staff can see leads, and they sign in with a one-time code. No system is perfectly secure, but if a breach ever affects your info, we'll tell you as the law requires.
Your choices
- Ask what info we have about you, or ask us to fix or delete it.
- Stop texts at any time (reply STOP), or tell us not to call or email you.
- Skip the photos and the texting box. Neither is required for an offer.

Children
This site is for adults 18 and over who own or can legally sell a vehicle. We don't knowingly collect info from anyone under 18.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. Big changes will be posted here before they take effect.
